Sanctuary Court on Spring

The Development:

Sanctuary Court is a mixed-use planned unit development located on Spring Street between Rutledge and Ashley Avenue on Charleston’s main peninsula. This property is located within the Cannonborough/Elliottborough neighborhood, and the community concept is the incorporation of residential and mixed-use spaces, resulting in an appropriately scaled neighborhood court.

The community consists of 20 long-term rental apartments, 8 short-term vacation rental suites, 1 office space and 1 restaurant space. The exterior finishes are comprised of brick, traditional stucco, cementitious siding, Ipe louvers, aluminum clad windows/doors and ornamental steel. The landscaping is a mixture of large canopy trees, including Live Oaks, Japanese Maples and Cherry trees, with large Sable Palms mixed throughout. The hardscape displays traditional tabby concrete, herring bone and running bond brick pavers and pervious limestone gravel. The large 20’ wide by 150’ long private Court serves as the central element of the community and creates a shared open space for residents to enjoy. Each building in the development relates directly to the court, creating a common gathering space.

The Construction:

Through meticulous planning and scheduling, CKC Construction completed this development in a 10-month period. The schedule focused on sequencing the work on the site from back to front, pouring all foundations and installing the road substrate prior to beginning framing. This allowed for an efficient, safe and organized job site throughout construction.

The History:

When Cannonborough/Elliottborough was founded, the land known today as Sanctuary Court, was safely nestled in the midst of dual fortresses. This location provided security, safety and comfort to the early settlers of Cannonborough/Elliottborough. In its more recent life, this land was home to the congregants of the Plymouth Congregational Church for 57 years, providing a sacred place of worship, peace and fellowship for many individuals and families. Taking this land’s history into consideration, Sanctuary Court was created to provide comfort, security and a sense of community to its residents.
