Brief History of the Property:

6 Radcliffe Street is comprised of a parcel that is 30 feet in width along the Radcliffe Street frontage and extends back 104 feet to the rear of the lot. The original two-story structure was built in 1872 according to historical information.   The rear addition was demolished and re-constructed sometime between 1951 and 1955 according to the city Sanborn maps. The Sanborn maps indicate this lot had a second significant tenement structure which existed from at least 1884 to 1902. This second structure disappeared along with the back portion of the original structure sometime prior to 1944. This back portion was rebuilt in 1951 as a 1-story addition and in 1955 became the 2-story addition that extends in width beyond the porch and still stands today.

Project Description:

When renovating this property our goal was to incorporate new mechanical, electrical, and life safety systems while maintaining and renovating significant historic elements. These original elements became an architectural feature as we converted the old chimney to an area that could house the cooking range and a hood vent. Creating an arch out of the original brick with enough interior room to recess the hood vent accomplished our goal. The 100-year-old mantels from these fireplaces were also salvaged and refinished. We have displayed these in the living area of each apartment.

This successful renovation of a classic Charleston single home now offers premium living accommodations in each of the two-bedroom, one bathroom apartment units.
